Gmail: Please let me back up my email

Posted November 6, 2007 by computeruservideophiler

I have been using Gmail for almost two years now faithfully.  I liked the security, and the 4GB Inbox that even when it was 2GB it didn’t match Hotmail.

I want to be able to backup my emails offsite and clear out all of my emails, so that I can have a fresh start.  That isn’t made easy for us.  And when I set up my email client for IMAP, I have a truckload of emails that I just don’t want in my client at all.

All that we ask is that you allow us to download our emails (whether it be an ISO, zipped, tarball whatever), and burn them so that we can keep at home in case your servers go bust, which is unlikely.

If any of you agree with me, please make your voices heard in the comments section.

Kara Matthew,

EO: Dankon pro via enketo, kaj pardonon pro mia prokrasto respondi al
gxi!:
EN: Thank you for your enquiry, and forgive me for the delay in
replying to it!:

I’m affraid that at the moment, we are re-building our catalogue, and
as a consequence, the list of available titles is temporarily quite
small. Although new titles are being added every week, it is
impossible for us to tell you when a specific title (such as a good
dictionary) will become available.

Nevertheless, here are a few options for you:

1) you can contact the Australian Esperanto Association
Correspondence Courses:
http://kurso.esperanto.org.au

They have a series of excellent long-distance correspondence courses,
which are quite cheap, and include ALL the material you will need
(study books, CDs and dictionaries) as well as ongoing, private
tuition. You can’t ask for a better start! :-)

2) if you are really only interested in getting a dictionary, my
(personal) advice to you would be to start with *any* ‘generic’, 2-
way (that is, English-Esperanto and Esperanto-English) dictionary you
can find. The 2 that seem to be most popular at the moment are
nicknamed ‘Nixon’, and the ‘Fulcher and Long’ – both nicknames come
from the names of the authors. Once you get to an intermediate level,
you will likely need a good one-way English-Esperanto dictionary
(Benson’s “Comprehensive English-Esperanto Dictionary”), and a good
Esperanto-Esperanto dictionary (the “Plena Ilustrita Vortaro”). I
would recommend you look for these titles:

* in the online catalogue of the Universal Esperanto Association:
http://katalogo.uea.org

* in the online catalogue of ‘Esperanto-USA’
http://www.esperanto-usa.org

* in any good bookshop, that can order the titles in for you!

3) become a member of the Australian Esperanto Association – you can
download the membership form from (http://aea.esperanto.org.au/english/docs_assets/aea_membership_form_2007_b.pdf)
The reason why I recommend that, is because very soon we here at the
Libroservo will be doing a gigantic ‘firesale’ of our OLD STOCK -
which does include a few dictionaries. All the books will be sold
roughly at 50% of their true value, and there will be over 500 titles
to choose from. However, the firesale will ONLY be available to
members of the AEA! – so join up quickly! :-)

I hope this information helps, Matthew, but if you still have any
questions, or need any further guidance, please do not hesitate to
contact us again. And please, keep checking our catalogue, as new
titles are added every week!
